Bonefish

Challenge your heart and your skill pursuing this great fish. Our local waters can produce the largest bonefish in the world. Large expanses of white sand flats and turtle grass offer the ideal scenario for sight casting to feeding bonefish. It’s Red-Hot Bone-fishing in the Florida Keys with plenty of action for light-tackle and fly rod anglers of any skill level. Extremely elusive and very sensitive to sound and movement, they seem to appear out of nowhere and disappear as quickly. They are aptly nicknamed the Grey Ghost. Although not the largest of the species targeted on the flats, the initial run, once hooked, will make you think otherwise.

We stalk these fish on the flats of the Florida Keys in smaller skiffs where the water is shallow and still. We use a push pole to quietly maneuver the boat to the fish and into position for the cast of a lifetime. We fish for bonefish a couple of different ways. Fly-fishing using an 8-9 weight fly rod and reel with many different fly patterns and sizes, is one of the preferred methods. Live Bait choices are usually crabs or shrimp but small jigs are just as effective.

The prime time for bonefish is from March till the first major cold spell when the water temperature drops below 70 degrees, however, they can be caught all year. The average size of fish is from 4 to 8 lbs with fish up to 14 lbs very common. You have to fish the tide for these beauties. Knowing what flat to be on and when to be there is the trick. Let me guide you toward your first bonefish or to add notches to your fishing belt.
