The Silver King, just as its nickname implies, is the king of the backcountry and flats. Typically you find the largest of the kings on the ocean side flats during the spring migration, but don't tell the Tarpon in the Everglades, backcountry or around the Gulf side beaches that. Whether they are 25 pounds or 150 plus pounds, they will give you an aerial show and a run you’ll never forget. Cast a live crab to a school of tarpon on a spinning rod. Throw a large plug and watch a tarpon slam it off the surface. Tarpon feed on anything from shrimp and crabs to pinfish, pilchards, and mullet. The best artificial that we have found for tarpon is a well presented fly which is why so many fly-fishing enthusiasts come to The Keys and SW Florida to fish for one of these beasts during their migration. Tarpon are one of the most acrobatic fish when hooked…but that's the problem, getting them hooked. Their mouths are very hard and bony which makes a good hook set difficult. These fish are intense. Tarpon test all the variables, including the angler, the guide, the gear, and the Tarpon. You can expect me to put you in the right spot at the correct tide, to make things happen. I have fished these waters for the silver king since I was a kid. Boat position is everything when it comes to presenting a fly or bait to a Tarpon.
