For some, sight fishing is more than just another fishing technique. It is an obsession that combines the challenge of the hunt with the thrill of the catch. Anglers quietly pole the shoreline, never taking a cast until their prey is sighted. Small or unwanted fish are ignored. Then, when the trophy appears, a well placed fly or lure is tossed on the fish’s nose, and the battle begins.
The vast gin clear flats and shallow water banks of the Florida Keys, Key West and the Marquesa’s, offer the fly and light-tackle angler, classic knee knocking confrontation with huge Tarpon, trophy sized Bonefish, elusive Permit, streaking Barracuda, Shark, Cobia and a host of other species. This is sight casting at its finest, where you pick your target, make the presentation, watch the take, and hold on for the fight of your life. In my 2007 Ranger 18’3 Ghost, we’re able to pole after the fish in just about any conditions. I work just as hard for the beginner as I do for the seasoned veterans, with patience, instruction, and most importantly, a good sense of humor.
Fly and Light-Tackle angling on the flats of the Florida Keys requires several key ideas and methods. My goal is to give you the best possible opportunities to catch that sought after trophy fish and release it to be caught again, without the undo pressures often associated with this type of sport. I also realize that angler capabilities combined with weather, tides and the like, present situations, often from day to day, that vary greatly. With this in mind, each day’s fishing is tailored to giving you the best situations under which to fish. Be sure to read my Fish and Tactics pages to learn more.
What I, Captain Rob, want more than all else is for you to remember and treasure your experiences aboard the Front Runner and to return many times as a friend. You will be exposed to a lot of wildlife and ecological views and experiences along with the fishing and fish tales. It is quite necessary to understand and be exposed to things that shape and effect our environment here and ultimately affect the health of our fisheries and marine ecosystems.
